辜鸿铭先生《论语》译本欣赏
辜鸿铭精通英、法、德、拉丁、希腊、马来亚等9种语言，号称“清末怪杰”，是满清时代精通西洋科学、语言兼及东方华学的中国第一人。他热衷向西方人宣传东方的文化和精神，并产生了重大的影响，西方人曾流传一句话：到中国可以不看三大殿，不可不看辜鸿铭。
壹
君子不器。——《论语·为政篇》
含义：
君子不能像器具那样，作用仅仅限于某一方面。
英译：
A wise man will not make himself into a mere machine fit only to do one kind of work.
贰
见贤思齐焉，见不贤而内自省也。——《论语·里仁》
含义：
看见有德行或才干的人就要想着向他学习，看见没有德行的人，自己的内心就要反省是否有和他一样的错误。
英译：
When we meet with men of worth, we should think how we may equal them. When we meet with worthless men, we should turn into ourselves and find out if we do not resemble them.
叁
志士仁人，无求生以害仁，有杀身以成仁。——《论语·卫灵公》
含义：
志士仁人，没有为了求生而损害仁的，只有牺牲自身来成全仁的。
英译：
A gentleman of spirit or a man of moral character will never try to save his life at the expense of his moral character: he prefers to sacrfice his life in order to save his moral character.
肆
学而不思则罔，思而不学则殆。——《论语·为政》
含义：
只是学习却不思考就会迷惑而无所得，只是思考却不学习就会有危害。
英译：
Study without thinking is labour lost. Thinking without study is perilous.
伍
文质彬彬，然后君子。——《论语·雍也》
含义：
质朴和文饰比例恰当，然后才可以成为君子。
英译：
It is only when the natural qualities and the results of education are properly blended, that we have the truly wise and good man.
陆
知之为知之，不知为不知，是知也。——《论语·为政》
含义：
知道就是知道，不知道就是不知道，这样才是真正的智慧。
英译：
To know what it is that you know, and to know what it is that you do not know, — that is understanding.
柒
不患人之不己知、患不知人也。——《论语·学而》
含义：
不要担心别人不了解自己，只担心自己不了解别人
英译：
One should not be concerned not to be understood of men; one should be concerned not to understand men.
捌
学而时习之，不亦说乎？有朋自远方来，不亦乐乎？——《论语·学而》
含义：
学过的内容在适当的时候温习，不也是一件很愉快的事吗？有志同道合的朋友从远方来，不也愉快吗？
英译：
It is indeed a pleasure to acquire knowledge and, as you go on acquiring, to put into practice what you have acquired. A greater pleasure still it is when friends of congenial minds come from afar to seek you because of your attainments.
玖
道千乘之国，敬事而信，节用而爱人，使民以时。——《论语·学而》
含义：
治理一个千乘之大国，为政应当谨慎而专一，对上下都能守之以信。节省财用，爱惜人民。征用劳役应当符合适当的时节，顾及民众的生产时间。
英译：
When directing the affairs of a great nation, a man must be serious in attention to business and faithful and punctual In his engagements. He must study economy in the public expenditure, and love the welfare of the people. He must employ the people at the proper time of the year.
拾
慎终，追远，民德归厚矣。——《论语·学而》
含义：
谨慎地对待父母的去世，追念久远的祖先，自然会培育出忠厚老实的百姓。
英译：
By cultivating respect for the dead, and carrying the memory back to the distant past, the moral feeling of the people will waken and grow in depth.
