In June 1968, as a wave of youth-led social movements rippled throughout many countries around the world, René Maheu, Director-General of UNESCO at the time, declared that “UNESCO must become the Organization for young people; the Organization where young people may freely […] give shape to their dreams”.

As contemporary challenges fall primarily on the shoulders of future generations, more than ever, UNESCO is striving to be the Organization for young people.

We are working with our Member States to support youth in the areas of our mandate: this is essential work at a time when only one in two young people in the world consider their mental well-being as satisfactory.

Young people are at the very heart of our action in education. We are mobilizing not only to protect it, particularly in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to rethink it.

Our Futures of Education report, published in December, will feed into the United Nations Transforming Education Summit, to be held in New York in September. This is a much-anticipated opportunity, as demonstrated by the mobilization of more than 150 ministers of education at UNESCO in June for the Transforming Education Pre-Summit.

We not only work for young people we also work with them. Faced with the environmental emergency and growing inequalities, young people are once again in the front line, working to defend gender equality and human rights.

Whether it is the dynamism of young researchers in all fields of science, the commitment of young people in the service of heritage and in the Biosphere Reserves, or their mobilization against racism and discrimination, UNESCO places the questioning, creativity and innovative strength of young people at the heart of its programmes and its reflection.

This is the purpose of our Youth as Researchers (YAR) initiative, launched two years ago, to support young researchers’ projects on the effects of the pandemic that has affected them so much. It currently supports 270 academic projects in 70 countries.

Public policy should be informed by their point of view. This was the aim of the YAR High-Level Policy Conference last March, during which young researchers were able to exchange with ministers and policy makers. At the conference, we also launched a Global Youth Coalition to sustain this research, including through a global grant scheme.

On this International Youth Day, UNESCO calls on all our societies to mobilize in support of young people and to hear their voices, because providing young people with the means to give shape to their dreams will help to create a better future for all.
