CWU Teacher Won Second Prize at National Translation Contest

The World of English Inc., organizer of the 12th “Beijing Normal University - The World of English Cup” National Translation Contest, rolled out the list of winners on Sep. 25. Mr. Ding Zhangang, Associate Professor of China Women’s University (CWU), won a second prize with his Chinese translation of “The Tragedy of Climate Change” by Jennifer Wallace. This is the second time that Mr. Ding won a prize in this translation event. In 2018, he won the first prize at the 9th “Zhengzhou University - The World of English Cup” National Translation Contest.

At the invitation of the organizer, Mr. Ding attended the Award Ceremony and Seminar Marking the 40th Anniversary of The World of English Magazine held in Beijing on Oct. 23. Mr. Wang Guangzhou, Head Judge of this translation contest and Professor from Beijing Normal University, presented the prize to Mr. Ding at the ceremony.

“The World of English Cup” Translation Contest, which made its debut in 2010, is sponsored by The World of English Inc., a subsidiary of The Commercial Press, and jointly held by the Social Science Translation Committee of Translators Association of China, the CATTI (China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters) Management Center, and China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, as well as a number of provincial-level translators’ associations. Over the past years, the number of participants of this annual contest has reached a new high each year, for it has become one of the most prestigious translation contests in the country.

In recent years, The World of English Inc. has partnered with a different university each year to organize the contest, which includes translating an English article into Chinese or a Chinese article into English. Contestants can choose to do either one or both, regardless of their nationality, age, or education background. As the co-organizer this year, Beijing Normal University was responsible for the first screening round of the submitted versions. To ensure the authority and credibility of the contest, a number of well-known translation experts from all over the country were invited to handle the re-evaluation and final review process.

Mr. Ding, a teacher of translation and interpretation courses at CWU, has engaged himself wholeheartedly in the field of translation research and practice, and has made notable achievements therein over the past decade. As Director of the Research Center for Translation Studies of CWU (RCTS) and a front-line teacher, Mr. Ding and his team have translated and published a lot of foreign literary and academic works, and coached about 30 CWU students to pass the MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) entrance tests of different universities, or to obtain their CATTI certificates, and another 10 students to win prizes at different national or international translation contests, including the Han Suyin International Translation Contest, “The World of English Cup” National Translation Contest, the Cross-Strait Interpretation Contest, and the Beijing Language and Culture University International Translation and Interpreting Competition.
